as a college student, it is incredibly easy to get wrapped up in a world that consists of stress over tomorrow's chemistry test, indulging in left over pizza, facebook creeping and which friend is going to host the weekend's next kegger.
for many of these 18-23 year olds, the idea of "being social" does not go beyond the classroom or close friends.
because of this, we college students often form a warped version of reality that does not span beyond our personal bubbles.
and this is where i come in.
ENTER -> jacquelyn turner. sociology/journalism double major at the university of cincinnati. wanting to create and initiate a sense of awareness of the world to somewhat mindless college students.
maybe mindless. but definitely not heartless.
this blog is dedicated to keeping students connected to social situations and happenings occurring in the communities and world around them.
so stay tuned, become aware, and above all: be social.
I have to admit I'm one of those "mindless" college students and would rather hang out with my usual group of friends than a bunch of strangers...so this will be an interesting blog to read and I'm excited to see where you go with it.
ReplyDeleteI love that our blogs have opposing themes. I'm all about antisocial behavior, and yours promotes being social. I hope that reading your blog will give me some insight into having a more meaningful impact on the community, even as someone who is not uber-social
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I don't really have a time for a social life or I'm sure I'd be extremely unhappy with what I've done in college so far.
ReplyDeleteBut that being said, I like your blog idea a lot, I really do. I find it funny how social networking has in effect disconnected a lot of people.
Like how Facebook is replacing phone conversations and even text messages. Or face-to-face conversations.
Kind of ironic, I think.
The only thing that used to bother me was the amount of students walking around campus, mindlessly bouncing their head back and forth to their iPods.
ReplyDeleteBut I understand how all of our technology has seemed to put us at a disconnect from each other. Even though I'm not a Facebook guy, I do spend a lot of time checking Twitter, and I'm especially guilty of zoning people out on Sundays during NASCAR races. That includes my own mother and father from time to time.
I'm interested to see what comes of your blog, and I'm sure I'll have an opinion on something.
i'm probably one of those people you're talking about. i have the people i hang out with and don't branch out much. i don't bother other people and others don't bother me much. it's kind of nice. it would be nice, though, to branch out because you're right, people are hanging out online anymore.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the social escapades of a college student can be a bit warped. How did we exist before Facebook? I feel like its been so long since I used AIM that it was like communicating on papyrus.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Where would the world be without Facebook ha? Cannot wait to read more!
ReplyDeleteAs already mentioned earlier, it is funny how facebook is a double-edged sword when it comes to people interacting with each other. I can't wait to read more about what you have!
ReplyDeleteI think I can play both roles. I of course enjoy hanging with my usual group of friends but I also enjoy meeting new people and learning about them.
